What driveways cost here

These are typical ranges for the Augusta market, stated as ranges because square footage, base condition, and access differ lot to lot. Your written estimate is measured on your property and itemized so you can see what's asphalt, what's base, and what's demolition.

Job typePer sq ftTypical project totalWhen it's the right call
Overlay / resurface$3–$7$3,000–$6,000Surface worn or cracked, base still sound and draining
New full-depth driveway$7–$13$4,500–$9,000New construction, or paving a gravel or dirt drive
Tear-out & base rebuild$8–$14$6,000–$10,000+Alligatored areas, ruts, soft spots — the base has failed
Extensions, pads & apronspriced by areasmall-job minimums applyThird-car space, turnarounds, RV or boat pads

Most projects we quote land inside the $3,000–$10,000 band. Long rural drives and short overlay patches fall outside it in either direction; the cost guide shows the square-foot math worked out by driveway size. Why each of those square-foot rates is what it is — and how to read a quote against them — is on the cost per square foot page.

Reading a low bid: asphalt quotes hide their differences underground. Ask every bidder three things — how thick the compacted stone base will be, how thick the asphalt lift is after compaction, and what happens to water at the edges. A bid that's a thousand dollars lighter usually got there by shaving one of those three.

New driveways: the build order

  • Subgrade first. We cut to grade and compact the native soil — and this is where the fall line earns its keep. Red clay lots toward Evans and Martinez get shaped so water sheds instead of soaking the subgrade; sandy ground toward Hephzibah gets tighter compaction and, where the loam runs loose, a geotextile separation layer.
  • Stone base, the part that decides everything. Graded aggregate base laid and compacted in lifts — thicker on clay, blended tighter on sand. Asphalt is only as strong as what it sits on.
  • Hot mix, machine-laid. Surface-mix asphalt placed at the thickness the estimate promised, then rolled to compaction while it's hot. Hand work only where machines can't reach.
  • Edges and water. Edges compacted at an angle so they don't crumble, aprons tied cleanly into the street, and grade checked so rain runs off the mat, not along it.

Overlays: half the cost, when they're honest

An overlay is a new lift of hot asphalt over your existing driveway — the surface renews, the old mat becomes part of the base, and the price is roughly half of a rebuild. It's the right economics for a large share of the 30-year-old driveways in Martinez and older Augusta neighborhoods. But it only works if the base under the old asphalt is still doing its job. Overlay a failed base and the same crack pattern telegraphs through the new surface in a couple of years; you've paid twice. We'll walk your driveway, flag any sections that flex, and tell you plainly which side of that line you're on — including when the answer is a cheaper repair visit instead of any paving at all. The overlay vs. replacement guide lays out that base evidence sign by sign.

Asphalt or concrete?

We only lay asphalt, so take this as explanation rather than sales: asphalt installs at a noticeably lower cost per square foot, tolerates the clay movement common north of the fall line by flexing rather than cracking through panels, and can be overlaid in twenty years instead of jackhammered. Concrete's strengths are real — decades of service with minimal upkeep, and it stays cooler underfoot — but its repairs are expensive and its cracks are permanent residents. If concrete suits your project better, a concrete contractor is the right call and we'll say so on the phone.

Fresh asphalt in a Georgia summer

Heat is asphalt's friend during compaction and its test afterward. A driveway paved in July stays workable longer — good for us — but cures slower, so we ask for 3–5 days before parking on it and a first summer of small courtesies: no sharp steering-wheel cranks while parked, boards under trailer tongues and motorcycle stands, sprinklers off the surface for the first week. By fall the mat has stiffened and ordinary use won't mark it. Then one sealcoat at the six-to-twelve-month mark locks the surface in.
